CONSECRATION DAY
We made it! We got the church finished, made our prayerful dedication, and set the first altar lights just in time for Consecration Day!
My 60th birthday, our annual Lucky Mojo Curio Co. Hoodoo Party, and the opening of Missionary Independent Spiritual Church all took place on May 12th, 2007.
I want to thank everyone who worked so hard at the last minute to make this dream a reality: Roger, our creative carpenter, Don, our indefatigable stone-mason and painter, Aurelio the Old World Iron Worker, my dear husband nagasiva (a man with the patience of Job!), and all the folks at our next-door-neighbor building, the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. shop -- especially Fern, Susie, Vida, Heidi, Nikki, and Eileen -- who donated extra time and energy to our beautiful church project.
The first guests to arrive on Consecration Day were set to work putting the finishing touches on the church's side-chapels -- and making sure that the statue of the Virgin of Guadelupe had electrical power to light its bulbs.
Other volunteers helped set up a book sale for Y.I.P.P.I.E. -- the non-profit Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology. The books -- all donations from kindly individuals -- went to nw homes, and the money went to a good cause, that of keeping folk-magic in the eye of the public, and passing on traditions to the past to generations of the future.
While i stood around fussing, folks i know from the shop and from my classes -- and folks i could swear i had never seen before -- arrived early and were kind enough to sweep the paths, help set up food tables, and, set out the poluck food they had brought.
Then the guests began to arrive -- some of them people i had not seen in a very long time. I was pretty well overcome by the show of love and affection, and had to spend a little time by myself just marvelling at the way people have responded to the creation of this tiny chuch in the middle of nowhere -- such an outpouring of love and friendship, it really touched my heart.
Fern's husband John Aycock and his friend George Mueller appeared next, to serenade us all with wonderful old-timey music. They played everything from blues to bluegrass, and even some old-time gospel.
Then much to our pleasure, the original "owner" of our church building, Debbie Burgess Mumm, showed up, along with her husband. Back in 1962, Debbie was the little girl for whom her dad, the talented artist Don L. Burgess, built the Burgess Bus Stop, so that she would have a place to wait for the school bus out of the rain. The picture above shows Debbie, now all grown up with children of her own, standing proudly bside the Missionary Independent Spiritual Church Building -- her bus-stop reborn.
